The CEO of Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) and UN Special Representative, Damilola Ogunbiyi, has been named in TIME magazine’s 2024 TIME100 Climate List, which honours the top 100 leaders advancing climate action in business and public policy. Ogunbiyi, who also serves as Co-Chair of UN-Energy, is recognised as a key advocate for equitable energy transitions, particularly in the Global South, where she has championed initiatives aimed at decarbonising energy systems while addressing energy poverty.
TIME’s selection acknowledges Ogunbiyi’s efforts in accelerating climate action, with a focus on sustainable energy solutions that leave no one behind. Her leadership at SEforALL has helped to place energy access and climate resilience at the forefront of the global climate agenda. Francesco Starace, Chair of the SEforALL Governance Board, praised Ogunbiyi’s recognition, highlighting her influence on international climate policy. “Damilola has demonstrated that rapid change is possible with the right focus and dedication. Her efforts are a vital step towards a greener, more inclusive future,” Starace said.
Reacting to the accolade, Ogunbiyi extended gratitude to her colleagues and stakeholders who have supported her vision. “This recognition is not just a reflection of my work but of the entire team committed to accelerating climate action and eradicating energy poverty,” she remarked, adding that the goal remains to drive forward an inclusive, just energy transition.
TIME’s honour is the latest in a series of recognitions that Ogunbiyi has received for her role in global climate advocacy. This year alone, she was awarded the First Class Order of Zayed II by the President of the UAE in acknowledgment of her contributions to COP28. She also received the Global Female Leadership Impact (GFLI) Award, highlighting her influence on climate action and her impact on leadership.
Earlier in 2024, Ogunbiyi was recognised by Reuters as a “Trailblazing Woman in Climate” and a “Trailblazing Woman in Energy.” Her advocacy within SEforALL has consistently brought attention to the urgency of climate action in the energy sector, influencing both global policymakers and the private sector.
Ogunbiyi’s leadership approach prioritises sustainable energy as a critical tool for climate mitigation and poverty reduction. Under her guidance, SEforALL has advocated for large-scale adoption of renewable energy systems, championing initiatives that support cleaner, affordable energy solutions for communities that have traditionally been left behind in the climate transition.
In 2023, Ogunbiyi was awarded the Energy Institute President’s Award, which honoured her contributions to addressing critical global energy challenges. Her tenure at SEforALL and her role as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative have been marked by efforts to mobilise international support for sustainable energy access and resilience initiatives.
As Co-Chair of UN-Energy, Ogunbiyi continues to push for systemic change that aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, emphasising that the climate crisis demands an inclusive response. TIME’s recognition reinforces her influential position as one of the leading voices in climate and energy action.
With Ogunbiyi at the helm, SEforALL is set to continue its mission to deliver sustainable, inclusive energy solutions, contributing towards a decarbonised future that is accessible to all. Learn more about our work at www.SEforALL.org
