Slicker Recycling and Castrol have announced a new partnership aimed at promoting a more circular approach to used oil management in the UK. This collaboration focuses on providing seamless used oil collection and re-refining processes to extend the lifecycle of resources, thereby supporting the principles of the circular economy.
The initiative is currently in its pilot phase, offering Castrol’s automotive and industrial clients a digital end-to-end lubricant management system, enhanced by tank telemetry technology. This innovative system simplifies the process of lubricant management, allowing customers to devote more time to their core business operations. It also ensures that used oil is efficiently refined back into base oils for repeated use.
One of the significant advantages of this partnership is that it alleviates the need for customers to schedule oil collections. Instead, used oil will be collected and transported directly to Slicker Recycling’s base oil re-refinery in Denmark, which operates in collaboration with German partner Avista AG. This streamlined process conserves resources and contributes to a more sustainable oil management strategy.
Mark Olpin, executive chairman of Slicker Recycling, expressed pride in collaborating with such a respected global brand as Castrol. He remarked, “We’re extremely proud to partner with such a respected global brand like Castrol and support them in driving circularity. It’s a hugely exciting scheme which we believe is a first in the UK. The learnings will help inform how we collect and process used oil in a more sustainable way.”
The integration of digital tank telemetry technology offers a simplified end-to-end lubricant management system. This advancement means customers will no longer need to call to arrange collections; instead, collections will occur only when tanks are full. Olpin highlighted that this improvement allows for a more efficient service and maximises the collection of used lubricating oil, which can then be reintroduced into circulation.
Vesna Di Tomasso, CEO of Castrol Europe, added, “We know our customers are focused on sustainability and are looking for ways to reduce waste and become more circular. This pilot will help us test a more circular lubricant lifecycle with our customers.”
This partnership announcement follows Slicker Recycling’s recent accolade, having been awarded the prestigious 2024 King’s Award for Enterprise. This recognition highlights the company’s commitment to strong working practices, growth in overseas trade, business excellence, and sustainable development.
By combining resources and expertise, Slicker Recycling and Castrol aim to set a benchmark in used oil management, helping their clients reduce waste and contribute positively to the environment. This initiative not only underscores their commitment to sustainability but also reflects a growing trend among businesses seeking to implement more circular practices within their operations.
