The inaugural Saudi Reef Forum has successfully concluded, marking a significant milestone in the Kingdom’s efforts to drive rural empowerment and sustainable development. Held under the patronage of HRH Prince Saud bin Nayef Al Saud, Governor of the Eastern Province, the three-day event saw a remarkable turnout and strategic initiatives aimed at improving the agricultural sector.

Recognised by Guinness World Records as the most attended agricultural forum globally, the forum brought together nearly 5,000 visitors and 70 speakers. Attendees included representatives from government, academia, businesses, local farms, and NGOs. The event highlighted the vital role rural communities play in the Kingdom’s growth and the importance of public-private partnerships in fostering rural development. This aligns with both Saudi Vision 2030 and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

The forum was officially opened with speeches from prominent figures such as HRH Prince Saud bin Talal bin Badr Al Saud, Governor of Al-Ahsa, HRH Princess Mashael bint Saud Al Shalan, Founding Partner of AEON Collective, and the Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, HE Eng. Abdulrahman bin Abdulmohsen. The opening panel focused on rural development and the Saudi Reef Program, a $2.2 billion initiative designed to strengthen the agricultural sector, support small-scale farmers, and create new job opportunities.

Throughout the event, the forum fostered dialogue and collaboration, featuring international experts and leaders in sustainable development. Key speakers included Prof. Allam Ahmed, President of the World Association for Sustainable Development, May Hani from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and Prof. Nathan Furr from INSEAD. They shared insights on rural transformation, innovation, and strategies for fostering inclusive value chains.

Innovations discussed at the forum included nature-inspired solutions such as engineered biochar made from local waste, which enhances soil fertilisation and irrigation. Workshops were held to equip agricultural workers with essential skills, and discussions focused on state-level initiatives and the global impact of sustainable agricultural practices. The forum also promoted cross-sectoral partnerships, providing a platform for collaboration and knowledge exchange.

During the forum, five significant agreements were signed between the Saudi Reef Program and various public and private sector entities. These agreements aim to enhance cooperation in agriculture, training, and innovation. Key partners include the Saudi Food and Drug Authority, the Culinary Arts Authority, the King Khalid Foundation, Dan Company, and the Technical and Vocational Training Corporation.

Dr. Maha Aldhahi, Head of the Forum’s Preparation Committee, highlighted the importance of international cooperation in achieving economic, environmental, and social sustainability. She emphasised that the forum aims to foster a sustainable future by addressing global challenges and scaling local solutions.

Running alongside the forum, the Saudi Reef Exhibition showcased innovative agricultural technologies, local produce, and sustainable farming methods. The exhibition also featured workshops led by local artisans and tours of Al-Ahsa’s historic landmarks, offering a glimpse into traditional farming practices and rural crafts.

The Saudi Reef Forum has laid a solid foundation for future initiatives, helping to drive collaboration and innovation. Its focus on rural empowerment contributes not only to Saudi Arabia’s development but also to global efforts aimed at revitalising rural communities. With its emphasis on sustainable and balanced development, the forum has set the stage for a prosperous future for Saudi Arabia’s rural areas.
