Mitsubishi Electric Corporation has joined forces with Finland’s VTT Technical Research Centre to tackle a pressing environmental issue: ocean acidification caused by carbon dioxide (CO2) absorption. Through a memorandum of understanding, both companies are set to collaborate on the development of direct ocean capture (DOC) technology. This innovation aims to remove CO2 directly from seawater, mitigating the effects of acidification and contributing to global efforts toward carbon neutrality.

Ocean acidification, a byproduct of increased CO2 levels in the atmosphere, occurs when the ocean absorbs CO2, leading to a decrease in pH levels and making seawater more acidic. This growing problem threatens marine ecosystems and industries reliant on the ocean, such as fishing. The impact of acidification disrupts the delicate balance of marine life, putting coral reefs, fish, and other vital organisms at risk. This decline not only affects biodiversity but also threatens economies that depend on healthy oceans for food, livelihoods, and tourism.

Mitsubishi Electric, a global leader in electronics and sustainability initiatives, has long committed to reducing its carbon footprint. The company aims to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions across its entire value chain by 2051. This new partnership with VTT, Northern Europe’s largest research institute, will enable the development of nature-positive technologies. One of the first initiatives is the creation of DOC technology, which will not only remove CO2 but also help restore the ocean’s natural pH balance.

Direct ocean capture technology works by extracting CO2 from seawater, effectively lowering its acidity. The captured carbon can then be stored or repurposed, reducing the amount of harmful CO2 in the environment. By focusing on CO2 removal, the collaboration is expected to have a significant impact on the fight against climate change. Mitsubishi Electric’s commitment to sustainability goes beyond its current operations, aiming to create innovative solutions that benefit both society and the planet.

Mitsubishi Electric’s sustainability strategy focuses on synergistic business growth while enriching society and the environment. As the world moves towards carbon neutrality, the company’s partnership with VTT represents a critical step forward in addressing climate change and its impact on the oceans. The collaboration is expected to play a key role in developing sustainable technologies that will help preserve marine ecosystems for future generations.
