DSM Group, a leader in IT infrastructure and data management, has officially opened its flagship Eco Data Centre in Peterborough, marking a significant step towards sustainable data storage and IT services. The grand opening was attended by local dignitaries, including the Mayor and Mayoress of Peterborough, as well as MP Sam Carling, industry leaders, customers, and community members.
CEO Mike Richardson highlighted the importance of the project, stating, “Our Eco Data Centre marks a pivotal moment for DSM and the wider IT industry. We are setting a new benchmark for sustainability in data services, blending high-performance technology with a strong commitment to protecting the environment.”
The new facility features innovative energy-efficient technologies, including a 200kW solar farm installed on-site. This installation aims to significantly reduce the centre’s reliance on traditional energy sources, generating renewable power for daily operations. DSM Group aims to set an example in minimizing the carbon footprint associated with IT infrastructure.
To enhance energy efficiency further, the Eco Data Centre employs U-Systems water-cooled racks. These advanced cooling systems use water-based technology to manage heat more efficiently than conventional air-cooling methods, thereby maintaining optimal operational conditions while minimizing energy consumption.
The Eco Data Centre is designed to cater to the needs of modern businesses, offering colocation services that ensure secure, flexible, and scalable data hosting options. With 24/7 monitoring, advanced security measures, and resilient infrastructure, the facility guarantees an impressive 99.999% uptime for mission-critical operations.
In addition to colocation services, the centre features over 500 fully equipped workplace recovery positions across four dedicated suites. These positions provide a backup operational environment for businesses in emergencies or disruptions. The facility also boasts an 18-seat executive boardroom and a 50-seat conferencing suite, catering to corporate clients requiring high-end facilities for strategic planning and recovery.
Beyond technological advancements, DSM Group’s commitment to sustainability is evident in the development of an onsite nature reserve designed to protect and enhance local biodiversity. The reserve features a large lake that serves as a natural habitat for wildlife and plays a crucial role in the centre’s water management and cooling systems, ensuring optimal conditions for the water-cooled racks.
The lake also served as the focal point for a charity lake dip event held during the launch, raising funds for two local charities: Little Miracles and Bliss. DSM Group actively participated in the fundraising campaign, contributing an additional £500 toward a £1,000 target.
Strategically located in Peterborough, the Eco Data Centre is accessible within 50 minutes by train from London and via major trunk roads, including the A1M, A605, and A47. This prime location allows the facility to serve businesses across the UK efficiently, providing a high-performance, eco-friendly data solution.
Looking ahead, DSM Group plans a second phase of expansion to further enhance the Eco Data Centre’s capacity and capabilities, maintaining a focus on sustainability and reinforcing its leadership in green IT infrastructure.
Mike Richardson summarised the significance of the project: “This facility isn’t just a technological achievement; it’s a testament to the future of sustainable business. We’re building a legacy of environmental stewardship that benefits both our clients and the planet.”
