Crowcon Detection Instruments, a leader in gas safety technology, has introduced its latest gas detection device, the IR Plus, designed to offer unmatched stability and reliability in demanding environments. The IR Plus detector leverages advanced infrared technology to deliver real-time measurements of methane, propane, butane, and other hydrocarbons, aiming to enhance safety for employees and protect assets in high-risk workplaces.
Crowcon, which has over 50 years of experience in gas detection, developed the IR Plus to meet the rigorous requirements of industries where explosive or flammable gases are a constant hazard. The device is engineered for extreme conditions, such as offshore oil and gas facilities, and features a robust design that withstands challenging weather, high humidity, and corrosive elements.
A key innovation of the IR Plus is its dual-beam infrared technology. The device uses a unique signal stabilisation system with Stay-clIR coated hydrophobic reflectors, which prevent issues caused by dust, moisture, and corrosive chemicals. Unlike conventional infrared detectors that split the light beam, the IR Plus eliminates potential errors by stabilising the signal without this step. This advancement minimises false alarms and reduces downtime, ensuring continuous monitoring.
The IR Plus’s durability was put to the test in compliance with the Chinese Humidity Test standard GB/T 2423.3-2006, which evaluates equipment’s resilience to high temperature and humidity. The device maintained fault-free operation under conditions of 40°C and over 93% relative humidity, distinguishing it from other detectors on the market.
Product Manager Yasin Yehya commented on the design, saying, “We understand the challenges faced by industries operating in extreme environments. The IR Plus is one of the few devices that withstands both the heat and humidity of the Middle East and the harsh conditions of the North Sea. This versatility makes it an ideal solution for the oil and gas sector and similar applications.”
In terms of performance, the IR Plus is the fastest detector in its class, able to respond in just four seconds when exposed to minimal gas levels. Its precision and rapid response are particularly advantageous in preventing incidents that could arise from gas leaks in hazardous areas.
The IR Plus is encased in stainless steel SS 316L, making it explosion-proof and resistant to corrosion. It also features remote, non-intrusive calibration and maintenance options, allowing it to be placed in hard-to-access locations where it can be checked and calibrated remotely. This capability maximises operational uptime and ensures ongoing protection without the need for frequent on-site intervention.
The device’s compatibility with various control systems further enhances its appeal. It provides 4-20mA and RS-485 Modbus signals as standard, with an option for HART communications, which enables remote diagnostics and integration with asset management systems. This flexibility ensures that IR Plus can be seamlessly incorporated into gas detection panels, PLCs, DCS, and SCADA systems.
Michael Vaux, Product Director at Crowcon, highlighted the device’s compliance with safety standards: “The IR Plus will be SIL 2 certified in December, meeting the EN 61508 Functional Safety standard for both hardware and software. This certification reinforces its reliability and safety integrity.”
Crowcon’s IR Plus is a robust addition to the company’s gas detection range, underlining its commitment to a safer, cleaner, and healthier world. With its unique capabilities, the IR Plus promises to set a new standard in gas safety monitoring across high-risk sectors. For more information on the IR Plus visit: www.crowcon.com/products/ir-plus/
