AM Green Technology and Solutions, a global leader in energy transition solutions, has announced a significant acquisition of Finnish bio-refinery firm Chempolis Oy, along with Fortum 3 B.V. entities. The deal marks a major step in AM Green’s vision to lead the global bio-refinery industry and accelerate decarbonisation efforts, particularly in aviation.

The Hyderabad-based company plans to invest $1bn over the next three years to develop bio-refineries capable of producing over 0.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This initiative will be key in supporting the decarbonisation of global airlines, which are under increasing pressure to reduce carbon emissions.

Chempolis Oy, based in Oulu, Finland, is known for its pioneering work in lignocellulosic feedstock processing, which involves converting plant materials into high-value green chemicals and fuels. With more than 15 years of expertise in research and technology, Chempolis’ innovations enable the processing of second-generation (2G) waste materials like agricultural residues. This technology will now be central to AM Green’s efforts to develop large-scale bio-refineries, producing green products such as ethanol, furfural, and pure lignin.

Anil Chalamalasetty, Group Chairman of AM Green, said: “We are excited to partner with Chempolis to advance the processing of 2G ligno-cellulosic feedstocks. This highlights our commitment to developing innovative, technology-enabled solutions to establish large-scale bio-refineries that utilise multiple feedstocks and produce high-value green products, enabling global decarbonisation in aviation, fuels, chemicals, and other industrial sectors.”

The acquisition is expected to pave the way for a global network of bio-refineries, with AM Green intending to deploy Chempolis’ technology through a licensing model. This collaborative approach will allow the company to establish bio-refinery ecosystems worldwide, accelerating the transition to more sustainable energy sources. The technology will enable the efficient processing of various waste materials, making it a versatile solution for multiple industries.

AM Green’s planned investment in SAF production aims to support the decarbonisation of the aviation sector, which has set ambitious targets for reducing its environmental footprint. The Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) plants developed using Chempolis’ technology are expected to play a crucial role in providing sustainable alternatives to traditional jet fuel.

The new bio-refinery platform will also open up opportunities in other sectors, with the potential to create green chemical value chains for consumer and industrial products. This aligns with AM Green’s broader vision of transforming waste into valuable resources, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and contributing to a greener global economy.

Chempolis’ strong research and development background will be key in advancing AM Green’s ambitions. The company has been at the forefront of technological innovation in bio-refinery processes, and the acquisition is expected to bring significant benefits to both partners.

AM Green’s commitment to bio-refinery development is part of its broader strategy to lead in global industrial decarbonisation. The company’s large-scale bio-refineries will not only help reduce carbon emissions but also create a sustainable supply of renewable chemicals and fuels for multiple industries.

This acquisition signals AM Green’s intent to accelerate the global energy transition, providing cleaner, greener alternatives across a wide range of sectors.
