Private hire vehicle operator Otto Car has reduced its carbon emissions by 50,000 tonnes in just 12 months, thanks to the implementation of Samsara’s Connected Operations Cloud. Otto Car, the largest provider of private hire vehicles in Europe, operates a fleet of 5,600 vehicles in London, with 4,000 of these being electric. The company serves more than 75,000 people every day through its fleet, which is used by rideshare drivers across the capital.
Using Samsara’s advanced fleet management solutions, Otto Car can now access precise, real-time data about its vehicles. This has enabled the company to track and measure its sustainability progress accurately for the first time. The data includes insights on battery levels, vehicle degradation rates, miles driven, time on the road, and the most efficient routes to reduce journey times and minimise idling.
Real-Time Data Boosts Sustainability Goals
Gurinder Dhillon, founder of Otto Car, emphasised the role of technology in improving both the environment and business performance. “The best businesses of the future will be the ones that are good for the planet and good for the people they serve,” said Dhillon. “We’re not going to wait for the future to come to us, we’re going to lean into it, and Samsara’s technology is helping us achieve that goal. Samsara’s technology has played a crucial role in monitoring and optimising our fleet’s performance, contributing to the success of our sustainability initiatives.”
With the insights provided by Samsara’s Connected Operations Cloud, Otto Car has been able to optimise fleet operations and significantly reduce its environmental footprint. The ability to monitor the performance of both electric and non-electric vehicles in real time has been instrumental in driving Otto Car’s sustainability mission.
Tech-Driven Impact on Air Quality
Otto Car’s move towards sustainability is part of a broader push to improve air quality in London and meet the city’s stringent environmental standards. The company’s adoption of electric vehicles, combined with Samsara’s data-driven technology, has allowed it to prove its success in cutting emissions and reducing pollution in one of Europe’s largest cities.
Philip van der Wilt, SVP and GM of Samsara for EMEA, noted how the technology is helping businesses like Otto Car achieve their green targets. “Otto Car is showcasing how, through the Samsara Connected Operations Cloud, fleet-based businesses can deliver on their sustainability mission while improving efficiency. Visibility of its entire fleet has been crucial in capturing the data Otto Car needs to prove the positive impact its sustainability strategy is making.”
As the demand for greener transport options increases, Otto Car’s success could serve as a model for other fleet-based businesses. By investing in real-time data monitoring and sustainable vehicle options, Otto Car has demonstrated that it is possible to achieve significant reductions in emissions while maintaining efficient operations. With London’s transport system being a significant contributor to urban emissions, Otto Car’s achievements mark a major step forward in the fight for cleaner air in the capital.
Moving forward, the company aims to continue using Samsara’s technology to further optimise its operations and sustainability initiatives, ensuring that it remains at the forefront of eco-friendly transport solutions in Europe.
