Leeds-based electrical engineering firm Meson has partnered with Fera Science Limited (Fera) to implement a custom solar energy system, generating annual energy savings of £24,000. This innovative installation at Fera’s York Biotech Campus aims to bolster the centre’s commitment to sustainable practices while ensuring seamless integration with its operational infrastructure.

Fera, a leading authority in plant and bee health, crop protection, and environmental safety, features large roof vents critical for daily experiments. These vents posed a unique challenge for Meson engineers, who needed to ensure that the solar panels would integrate without compromising the safety or functionality of the existing systems. Rigorous risk assessments were carried out to create a secure working environment for the installation team.

From the tender stage, Meson collaborated closely with Fera to assess their specific needs. The company conducted an extensive terrain analysis to identify potential obstacles and design a bespoke solar solution that would allow for straightforward installation and ongoing maintenance.

The final solution includes 342 N-Type solar modules, producing a total output of 150 kilowatt-peak (kWp). This configuration is designed to deliver high power performance, reliability, and safety for Fera’s operations.

James Hennigan, Managing Director of Meson, emphasised the value of solar energy for companies aiming to reduce their carbon footprints. “Solar panels are a great investment for companies looking to reduce overall carbon footprint and save on energy bills,” he noted.

Hennigan elaborated on the complexity of the project, saying, “For this installation, our solution had to be carefully designed to navigate the vents and other roof obstructions on site. We carried out a full on-site analysis and collaborated with our trusted partners, including J.B. Langley Associates Ltd, Whiterose Scaffolding, and electrical engineering consultants CGP MEP. Together, we created a solution that integrates seamlessly into the existing infrastructure and allows for ongoing routine maintenance.”

Fera’s Lead Business Analyst, Dean Betteridge, praised Meson’s approach, stating, “We couldn’t have chosen a better partner to work with for this project. Meson worked with us from the initial tender stage to validate the proposal and design a solution that would work effectively. Other companies we considered prioritised sales over detailed engineering considerations. However, Meson was passionate about finding the right solution from the very start and was meticulous in ensuring that the installation and maintenance of the panels would not disrupt our daily operations.”

The solar panel installation at Fera commenced in June and is expected to be completed by October. Meson will provide 24-hour support and carry out regular maintenance at the site, reinforcing their commitment to sustainability and operational efficiency in the long term.
